I’m At The Airport Bar

Two weeks ago Trish and I began a roadtrip down the California coast, starting in Seattle, culminating in Yosemite, and ending in San Francisco. I brought four books, of which I read maybe three chapters. I mean really! The delusion!! I wrote even less than I read, hence my absence last week.

And now, after filling you in on my California vacation, I feel like there is no un-annoying way to say I’m currently on my way to New York for a residency. It all sounds so cool and bicoastal, ew. I am actually very very nervous, and to feel more prepared and worthy, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to explore in this residency and in my art practice as a whole. It is my understanding that upon arriving, we will each have one minute to present ourselves to the group, before deciding how we might want to collaborate with each other over the following few days.

If you’ll indulge me, I’m going to use this letter to outline some possible talking points for my precious 60 seconds. This video Trish and I made of a controlled burn in Yosemite will serve as my backdrop, for no real reason other than I think it’s so sick and I want to do something with it.

So, without further ado, here is

What Interests Me At The Current Moment:

• male friendship dynamics

• forcing myself to not explain my art

• wildfires (we had them first, New York 😡)

• how technology challenges our ideas of consciousness vs soul vs essence etc.

• repetitive motions

• antiquated technologies

• family snapshots (i know, i can’t help it)

• keeping my phone off silent mode, like I’m 65

• fictionalized conversations

• the 2008 financial crisis

• experiences you can have while walking

• experiences you cannot have while walking

• online forums as all-but-physical places

• loneliness

• who the fuck is still shooting film and why (me; novelty)

• i want to stop! explaining! myself!

• how to collaborate with other artists when you’re a control freak

• the g&t I’m presently sucking down to knock me out for this red-eye
